Assessing the volume change behaviour of red mud through laboratory and field testing
Mine waste geotechnics, geochemistry and biology
Storage of the Red mud as a fine-grained waste generated during production of alumina from bauxite has detrimental impacts on the environment. Thus investigating the potential reuse of the red mud in various applications not only can reduce its adverse environmental effects, also could be beneficial by eliminating the need for large storage impoundments. This paper provides a review on the utilisation of red mud; and describes the applicability and potential use of the red mud in clay liners and clay core of embankments by investigating and analysing its relevant characteristics and geotechnical parameters including Soil Water Characteristic Curves, compaction and permeability.
