Governance of Tailings Dams, in the Wake of Mount Polley and Samarco Failures

Governance of Tailings Dams, in the Wake of Mount Polley and Samarco Failures

The recent Mount Polley and Samarco tailings dam failures have brought the governance of tailings dams into sharp focus. Current trends in governance includes requirement for a dedicated, appropriately qualified on-site responsible person, detailed safety inspections by external 3rd party specialists, and high-level, independent Review Boards.

The Workshop will discuss the appropriate level of tailings dam governance to avert the tragedy of ongoing tailings dam failures world-wide at a rate of about 2 per year. Tailings dam failures are a key threat to the mining industry’s financial and social licence to operate.
